Lateralni zvin gležnja je ena izmed najpogostejših mišično-skeletnih poškodb pri posameznikih, ki se ukvarjajo z rekreativnim ali tekmovalnim športom. Možen je tudi zvin ligamentov na notranji strani gležnja (t.i. everzijski zvin) ali pa ligamentov, ki povezujejo golenico ter mečnico v predelu nad gležnjem (t.i. visoki ali sindesmotični zvin gležnja).

Kljub visoki prevalenci in resnosti simptomov, ki lahko sledijo akutni epizodi zvina, zvin gležnja pogosto napačno velja kot benigna poškodba, ki se hitro reši s kratkoročnim zdravljenjem.
